Qiandongnan Draws Travelers for Cooler Weather and Longer Summer Stays

Qiandongnan in southwest China’s Guizhou Province is seeing growing demand for longer summer stays as travelers seek its cooler climate, natural scenery and cultural experiences. During the 2026 summer season, Qiandongnan has received more than 300,000 tourist visits per day on average, with visitors increasingly choosing family trips, rural experiences and extended stays over short sightseeing tours. To support this trend, the prefecture has expanded transport connections, healthcare and wellness services, cultural activities, outdoor recreation and nighttime tourism offerings. As 2026 marks the 70th anniversary of the founding of the Qiandongnan Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture, Qiandongnan has also introduced more than 70 new tourism experiences and business formats, further diversifying its tourism offerings and encouraging visitors to stay longer and explore more of the region.

London, London, United Kingdom, 19th Aug 2026 - As temperatures rise across many parts of China in August, Qiandongnan in southwest China’s Guizhou Province is attracting summer visitors with its relatively mild climate, with temperatures generally remaining in the low to mid-20s Celsius.

This summer, tourism in Qiandongnan is also showing signs of a shift from short sightseeing trips toward longer and more immersive stays.

According to local tourism data, during the 2026 summer season, Qiandongnan has received more than 300,000 tourist visits per day on average, with visitors from outside Guizhou accounting for 53.65 percent of the total. Hunan, Zhejiang and Guangdong are among the major source markets.

Travelers aged between 25 and 45 account for 59.27% of arrivals. Many visitors are choosing family trips and longer summer stays, combining sightseeing with rural tourism, cultural experiences and outdoor activities.

For Chen Dewang, a visitor from Zhejiang Province, this is his third year spending part of the summer in Guizhou.

“Summers in Zhejiang are hot and humid. Here, it feels like being in natural air conditioning,” Chen said.

This year, Chen brought his family on a self-driving trip along the “No. 1 Rural Tourism Road in China.”

“There are viewing platforms and service stops along the way, so there is no need to rush. Terraced fields and Miao villages are right outside the car window,” he said. “That slow-paced experience is something conventional scenic areas simply cannot offer.”

Liu Shanjuan, a visitor from Changsha, Hunan Province, chose to spend several days in villages including Langde and Zaidang. During the trip, her child learned about Miao embroidery, experienced traditional long-table banquets and participated in village-based educational activities.

“We gained far more from this than we would have from simply rushing from one attraction to another,” Liu said.

Services and Infrastructure Support Longer Stays

As visitor preferences evolve, Qiandongnan has continued to improve tourism-related services and infrastructure.

To better serve visitors staying for longer periods, Qiandongnan has brought 13 forest-based health and wellness centers into the designated medical insurance network. Areas including Leigong Mountain and Yuntai Mountain offer traditional Miao and Dong medical services, while cross-regional medical insurance reimbursement is also available for eligible visitors.

Transport connections have also expanded. All 66 A-rated tourist attractions in Qiandongnan are now connected by graded roads. High-speed railway stations and expressway exits provide connections to major destinations including Xijiang, Zhenyuan and Zhaoxing Dong Village, as well as venues associated with the Village Basketball Association, widely known as “Village BA,” and the Village Super League.

Across Qiandongnan, the tourism transport network currently includes 32 direct shuttle routes serving scenic areas, 10 dedicated tourist bus routes, seven high-speed rail transfer bus routes and 12 specialized routes serving small-group travelers. Seven integrated tourism transport hubs have also been established.

Together, these transport links are helping connect destinations across Qiandongnan and make multi-stop and longer-duration trips more convenient.

Daytime Activities and Nighttime Experiences

During the day, visitors to Qiandongnan can explore natural landscapes and experience the cultural traditions of local communities. Canyon rafting, wilderness camping, rural sporting events and intangible cultural heritage activities are among the experiences available to travelers.

More than 90 drum tower concerts have been staged in Congjiang, while the “Wowotou” urban concerts in Kaili and “Dingdingtang” themed concerts in Liping have provided additional settings for audiences to experience local and traditional music.

Nighttime tourism is also becoming a larger part of the visitor experience.

In Zhenyuan Ancient Town, the large-scale live performance Moonlight over the Wuyang River has been further developed. In Shibing, Baishajing has introduced illuminated nighttime rafting, while Xiasi Ancient Town in Kaili has launched an immersive light show over the river.

These nighttime offerings are extending tourism activities beyond daytime sightseeing and creating additional opportunities for dining, entertainment and other forms of local consumption.

Expanding Tourism Experiences in 2026

The year 2026 marks the 70th anniversary of the founding of the Qiandongnan Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture. Qiandongnan is also hosting Guizhou Province’s 11th Traditional Ethnic Minority Sports Games.

Against this backdrop, Qiandongnan has introduced more than 70 new tourism experiences, business formats and consumption scenarios during the year, covering areas including cultural tourism, outdoor recreation, rural experiences, sporting events and nighttime activities.

The developments reflect Qiandongnan’s broader effort to diversify its tourism offerings and encourage visitors to explore more destinations, participate in a wider range of activities and spend more time in the Qiandongnan Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture.
